A Rug in the Library? Yes, Please!

Make your library an inviting crowd pleaser: Part 1 of 5.
How do you turn your library into a social gathering place, a successful third place, where everyone feels at home? In an exclusive series of articles, our experts share tips and tricks in the Dutch professional magazine Bibliotheekblad to help make your library a welcoming and attractive destination. We're excited to share these insights with you as well! Part 1: Rugs in the library.

Small Budget? Refresh Your Library’s Interior with Rugs!

Looking to refresh your library’s interior on a budget? Rugs – also known as carpets – are a great solution! While accessories are often the last thing considered in a budget, a rug is actually a smart investment. Why? Because it’s much more than just decoration. Rugs define a space within a space, creating a designated area. A seating area, for example, becomes more visually distinct and immediately feels cozier. Rugs add warmth, color and personality to an otherwise plain space—while improving acoustics.

Additionally, they can subtly guide visitors, reinforcing the function of a particular area. A playful, colorful rug with bold patterns is perfect for a children’s corner, while a classic checkered pattern sets the mood in an English literature section. In this way, the interior visually connects with the collection.

Choose Quality and Safety

What should you consider when purchasing a rug? First and foremost, opt for commercial-grade quality. These heavier carpets are more durable, stay in place better and can withstand heavy foot traffic. Consider accessibility and mobility: Always choose low-pile rugs, as they are suitable for book carts, wheelchairs and strollers. Select a rug that is practical in terms of color and maintenance. Light-colored rugs show dirt quickly, while a mottled pattern helps camouflage stains. Want to minimize dirt and debris on your multifunctional rugs? Don’t forget to place a good door mat at the entrance! Another key factor is safety. Ensure the rug lies flat, without any edges curling, and stays securely in place. An anti-slip underlay is a simple solution. To prevent tripping hazards, avoid rugs with fringes or tassels in the library.

Sustainable Options for Any Budget

One major advantage of rugs is that they are relatively inexpensive and easy to move. They instantly add warmth and ambiance without requiring major renovations. Choosing a “trend-neutral” design ensures that after about five years, replacing the rug remains affordable and easy. Consider durable, custom-made rugs tailored to your library’s specific needs. Looking for a more budget-friendly option? Second-hand carpets from specialty stores are an affordable alternative and instantly create a cozy, authentic living-room feel. What if a rug isn’t practical in certain spaces, like a MakerSpace with a concrete floor?

In that case, consider stenciling the floor or painting it in colored sections instead. And what about rugs from stores like IKEA? Keep in mind that they are often of lower quality and may shift, even with an anti-slip underlay. Some libraries glue them down, which can damage the flooring underneath. In short, investing in quality always pays off. With rugs, you can quickly and easily refresh your library’s interior. Make the right choices in terms of color, quality, and maintenance, and both visitors and staff will enjoy these stylish additions for years to come. So, what are you waiting for?

Practical Carpet Tips

  • Plan ahead before purchasing rugs to make the most of colors, patterns and shapes— ensure they support the atmosphere you want to create in each section.
  • Consider round or organically shaped rugs if a rectangular rug doesn’t quite fit.
  • Avoid placing rugs on main walkways, as they can create barriers.
  • The bigger, the better! Don’t hesitate to go for a large rug, as long as it fits. Leave space around bookshelves and pathways while placing the rug in between.
  • Ideally, furniture should sit entirely on the rug. If that’s not possible, ensure that at least the front legs of chairs or sofas rest on it.
  • Complement the rug with matching accessories like plant pots or cushions.
