Variety is the spice of… seating
Libraries have long since ceased to be just about books. It’s about the experience: a place where people feel welcome, where the chance for meeting and rest come together. One way to achieve this is to think carefully about library seating. What do you consider when choosing seating? Variation in seating options creates a lively and inviting atmosphere.
Provide seating areas at different heights, such as high bar stools for quick coffee, comfortable armchairs for reading and beanbags for chilling on the floor. This gives the space a dynamic feel. Keep in mind various needs: chairs with armrests are comfortable for the elderly, while children are often set with an ottoman or two-seater, ready to be read to.
Did you know?
The most popular library seating areas are often those that provide a sense of shelter. For example, seats set against a wall or under a “canopy”. Cocoons? Always occupied. Coziness and security at their best!

The right chair in the right place
Create seating “islands” like a living room corner with comfortable armchairs that draw the eye. If you choose one material type in one place, such as wood, vary playfully with shapes and styles. Chairs for a community table? Alternate between chairs with and without backrests, if necessary. Make sure the chairs will fit under the table.
Are you creating a seating area near a walkway? Then choose a heavy piece of furniture that is difficult to move around. This serves two purposes: First, the extra weight means it will not easily get in the way of visitors. Second, a more fixed seating opportunity keeps the library accessible to less mobile visitors, creating a space where everyone immediately feels at home.
Furniture with a future
Always opt for quality. Chairs and tables that last are not only practical, but also a sustainable choice. Many pieces of furniture today carry labels for sustainability and circularity. Cocoons are usually made from solid carpentry and will last for years. Chairs with steel frames and replaceable upholstery are also a smart investment.
Don’t forget second-hand: a lived-in Chesterfield sofa instantly gives a warm, homey feel. Preferably, buy it from a specialized retailer. That way, you get a checked and sturdy piece for the library. “Have a seat!” should be the motto when decorating your library. You want to enter, stay for a short or long time and at least be able to sit comfortably.
Will that work with garden chairs or a picnic table? That’s up to you! Besides form and function, look at the atmosphere you want to create and take into account the tips provided above. With smart seating choices and creative combinations, you can transform your library into a social meeting place where everyone feels welcome and happy to take a seat again.
More tips for cozy seating
- Think about ergonomics: chairs with armrests and good seating comfort are important.
- Combine single-seaters with three-seater sofas, for example, so visitors can easily sit together.
- Use movable poufs or stools for flexible seating.
- Make young Gen Z’ers happy with beanbags. Place several together, preferably in a somewhat secluded spot. And, don’t worry: beanbags are sturdier than you think.
- Cushions in armchairs add color to the interior. Playing with shape and material adds warmth.
