New Book Release

A groundbreaking model brings fresh insight to the future of libraries, cultural centers, and the places communities need most. How do you ensure that people not only come, but also stay and grow in these places? These questions are at the heart of the new book Come, Stay, Grow – The Art and Science of the Places That Connect Us, written by urban anthropologist Amy Goedhart and architect Aat Vos, Creative Director at the consultancy and design studio includi.

In the opening chapters, Amy Goedhart and Aat Vos explore the essence of third places: what they are, why they matter, and how they come to life. This forms the foundation for the core of the book. Goedhart explains: “In Come, Stay, Grow, we introduce the Third Place Fundamentals: a new, exceptionally comprehensive model from includi that brings together practical and theoretical insights from various fields. It shows what to consider when designing, building, and maintaining these kinds of places.”

Decades of Experience and Research

According to Vos, insights from multiple disciplines are essential to truly understand third places. “Since our first book, 3RD4ALL – How to Create a Relevant Public Space, we have continued to immerse ourselves in the work of experts and thinkers from sociology, psychology, politics, anthropology, philosophy, architecture, economics, urban planning, and marketing.”

The Third Place Fundamentals are the result of decades of work and extensive research. At the center of the model are the three core principles – Come, Stay, and Grow: every third place should enable people to come, stay, and grow. Layer by layer, additional insights have been added to help clarify, articulate, and apply these principles in practice. From checklists on accessibility to clear steps for improving a place’s lighting and soundscape.
