Between storefront and bookshelf

Bibliotheek Amstelveen-Westwijk

A library that moves with its time while staying rooted in the neighborhood. In Amstelveen-Westwijk, these two seeming contradictions go hand in hand. Through a flexible and transparent interior plan, smart reuse and a furniture collection campaign among residents, a warm and inviting place emerged that truly belongs to the community.

why

A neighborhood library with a new role

Like its sister library in Aalsmeer, Bibliotheek Amstelveen-Westwijk was ready for a thorough redesign. The ambition: an inclusive and dynamic library where residents come together, learn and grow, with a central role for reading, knowledge sharing, cultural participation and digital inclusion.

Westwijk is a vibrant and green neighborhood in Amstelveen. The library is centrally located on Westwijkplein, in the middle of the shopping center, making it easily accessible for residents. This called for an interior that captures both these dimensions: a calm place for reading and studying, as well as a social meeting space that mirrors the energy of the neighborhood.

“By listening carefully, involving residents and using smart design, a library emerges that truly belongs to the neighborhood.”

How

Folding, functions, flow

To gain clear insight into opportunities and challenges, the design process started with an inclusive workshop with staff and partners, followed by spatial analyses. The interior plan was linked to a clear cost strategy with scenarios per budget level, ensuring that the transition to execution remained concrete and manageable, and could serve as a foundation for alignment between the library and the contractor.

In the design, the book collection is folded along the back wall like the pleats of a curtain. This creates space for new social functions without compromising collection capacity. A flowing configuration along the walls forms sheltered zones for different user groups.

Small stages contribute to the flexible use of the library. They provide space for programming, developed for and by users. One raised stage in the children’s area and a second, more informal platform in the lounge area allow for different types of use. Individual furniture pieces add a variety of seating options. Sustainability was key: existing bookshelves were upgraded and tables were given new tops.

The furniture mix has a distinct, curated character in part because many pieces are contributions of local residents.

A COLLECTIVE CHARACTER

what

A warm and inclusive library

The renewed Bibliotheek Amstelveen-Westwijk is a cozy neighborhood library with a personal character. Living room settings, cocoon-like spaces for privacy, a community table and a work bar along the window offer a place for every visitor and every moment. The clearly designated areas ensure a balance between calm and liveliness.

The furniture mix has a distinct, curated character in part because many pieces are contributions of local residents. This strengthens the sense of ownership and turns the library into a true third place.

The color palette connects the libraries in Amstelland and creates a recognizable visual identity. This library reflects Westwijk: diverse and for everyone.

Bibliotheek Amstelveen-Westwijk, like our projects Bibliotheek Uithoorn and Bibliotheek Aalsmeer, is part of Stichting Amstelland Bibliotheken.

“With the renewed Bibliotheek Amstelveen-Westwijk, we show how a library in the heart of a neighborhood is not just a place for books, but a living room for meeting, development and connection.”
