A place you can grow in more ways than one

Bibliotheek Haarlem Noord

The renewed Bibliotheek Haarlem Noord shows how a library can become the social heart of a neighborhood. Not just a place for books, but a true third place: warm, welcoming and open to all. A space where locals feel at home; where learning, meeting and relaxing come together naturally.

why

A social anchor in a changing neighborhood

In 2017, Bibliotheek Zuid-Kennemerland launched a future study of its branches. One pressing question surfaced in Haarlem Noord: how can we turn a traditional library into an accessible neighborhood hub, fit for a community of young families, teenagers and growing diversity? The library aimed to strengthen its social role and respond more directly to local needs.

We were asked to reposition the library as a meaningful third place. The ambition: a sustainable, accessible library that feels like the neighborhood’s living room. A space that invites connection and belonging—not just physically, but socially and emotionally too.

“We wanted to create a place that truly feels like home for the neighborhood. So we stepped outside, talked to people and asked: what do you want to see in your library? With includi’s help, we turned that shared dream into reality.”

Roxane Van Acker
Director, Bibliotheek Zuid-Kennemerland
How

From insight to action

The redesign began with an open exploration. What does the city need? What do users want? And how can the library play a central role? Ambitions were turned into a concrete design thanks to many talks and workshops with local partners, residents and young people. The guiding principle: a safe, inspiring space where everyone feels welcome. The biggest challenge? Balancing openness for visibility and safety with quiet corners visitors can retreat into.

Twist and Read

The bookshelves twist through the room like a snake.

what

A library with character

Working with a modest budget, the design focused on smart reuse. Existing elements were given new life: shelving units got fresh bases, materials were repurposed and color was used to add warmth. The result is a sustainable library that’s both functional and full of visual appeal. The reused bookshelves wind through the space like a snake. Overhead, a wooden slat grid adds structure and texture. Zones are defined by color, each with its own vibe and function. The result is a space that feels open and clear, yet cozy and layered.

A new stage was added to the reading café – ready for performances, presentations and neighborhood events. Out back, the “meemaaktuin” (hands-on garden) is cared for by local residents. New doors now connect the inside with the outdoors. Bibliotheek Haarlem Noord has become a vibrant meeting point. A place to read, work, play – or simply take a breather. An inclusive space that grows with the community.

More Impressions

  • Eye-candy: the mural at the entrance invites you in.

  • Families explore together, teens find calm corners to hang out, and older visitors come to read the paper and have a chat.

  • You don’t just borrow books here—you can take home a plant cutting too!

  • This library is more than a building. It’s a dynamic space for connection and growth.

  • New lighting shapes the experience of the space, highlighting both books and interior features.

“This library came to life thanks to a team of dedicated people who know the place inside and out. Everyone’s input made it what it is. Every time I visit, the colors and openness make me smile.”
