A Small Delight

Bibliotheek Harderwijk

The library of Harderwijk had to move to a new, smaller location in the Town Hall. It is now based at the "plaza" where several public functions combine, called the "Huis van de Stad" – the House of the Town. Since the library had to give up some square area in terms of quantity, it was time to add and condense quality. We made way for active programming: debating, reading, playing and creating.

why

Need for speed, desire to connect

As time was limited due to political and administration reasons, we turned quickly to our Design Workshop to create an interior design. This introspection was made possible by intensive classes for the library team members that focused on the Why (inspired by author Simon Sinek).

The team shared a vision: there should be room for debate and discussion, reading and learning, playing, doing and making. People should be able to work at the library, stay for recreational purposes and be able to have a bite to eat or a drink. The client consultation shaped the library’s interior: small scale, to play an important role in both education and culture.

"We dove into the core of the organization, and ever so important: we focused on the profile of the users and their needs."

how

Lifelong learning

User investigation by the library showed especially kids between 0-12, youth, families with young children and students visit Harderwijk Library. Friendly hosts are available on the floor, offering special attention to the elderly and the local connection with peers. Language education also plays an important role. Learning is easily possible thanks to classrooms, computers, workplaces, study spaces and quiet zones.

Books and new media are available in varied compositions. The fresh and colorful interior offers corners with an ambiance of their own, complete with large sofas and cozy seats. The space is small yet open, light, transparent and flexible thanks to mobile book racks. Wooden elements add warmth and varying heights in the ceiling with wooden laminations add playfulness.

what

A long stay in a small space

Thanks to its uncomplicated and inviting character, the space functions as an inclusive living room for the citizens of Harderwijk to wander among the various media, places and facilities. This small space now draws you in with a big welcome. Despite having reduced in size, its cozy character and openness invite visitors to stay longer, sip on a soft drink or coffee at the long reading tables, and get lost in a good book, magazine, or a pleasant chat.
