Cultural clubhouse

OBA CC Amstel

The new CC Amstel branch of OBA (Amsterdam Public Library) is a hidden gem found in Amsterdam’s lively neighborhood ‘De Pijp’. Sharing doors with a theater, this unique establishment blends an urban mix of functions, making it an ideal cultural community hangout—a true third place. The emphasis on Design for Programmability has been instrumental in shaping its distinctive character.

why

Reviving Amsterdam libraries

OBA is reviving its various library branches by establishing partnerships with other organizations. This enables locations to develop into community libraries that work together with neighborhood initiatives, local organizations and resident groups. The building of OBA CC Amstel, designed by architect Vera Yanovshtchinsky for the Municipality of Amsterdam, was originally designated to become the new home of the Ostade Theater. However, when OBA needed a new space for its former ‘Cinetol’ branch, an opportunity arose to combine multiple functions under one roof. Therefore, a close collaboration with the Ostade Theater was a logical step in this new direction.

"Design for Programmability played a key role in the development of OBA CC Amstel, as programming attracts, activates and keeps a mix of local users."

Designing for Local Engagement and Programmability

OBA branches have unique OBA DNA and a distinct character. CC Amstel, short for Cultural Clubhouse Amstel, combines the library, theater, makerspace, studio and café-restaurant. Design for Programmability was crucial in attracting and engaging a diverse range of local users. Our workshop with organizations, team members, and stakeholders led to a vision and plan to integrate Ostade Theater (now CC Amstel) with OBA. The outcome of the session was translated into a fresh design for a modern, multifunctional third place.

Ageless Charm, Boundless Possibilities

Versatile Haven

To emphasize the commonality, the different spaces have been given a multifunctional and inviting character for all ages.

what

Public space as the base

Conceptually, the public space was taken as a starting point, exemplified by the low-threshold neighborhood restaurant designed as a square. Emphasizing inclusivity, these spaces are designed to be multifunctional and inviting for all ages. There is a small theater hall on the ground floor that also serves as the library’s youth department, with the option to fill it with books. Upstairs, the first floor offers various seating areas for reading, relaxation, work and a public makerspace offering diverse workshops. On the ground floor, the foyer acts as a reception area and a theater foyer with an outdoor terrace. The indoor ‘square’ boasts tables and seats, encouraging visitors to linger, whether at the large reading table with a book or enjoying drinks and bites.
