Becoming more appealing and inclusive
The original idea was to create a non-commercial place that was also inviting to international visitors. It should set the tone for people to meet, find information and share knowledge. All ages had to be accommodated, from children to the elderly. The final goal was for all visitors to have the same opportunities to work, read, learn, play, or simply meet up. The first plan focused on social inclusion for younger visitors by adding a gaming station to the library’s youth section. However, these initial plans proved too modest for the district library in Kalk.

From playing games to serious Design Thinking
After we hosted a workshop and had been collaborating with the local team and talking to stakeholders, it became clear that Kalk was ready for a bigger change. Rather than a simple gaming station, we, together with Julia Bergmann, used Design Thinking methods to redesign the entire library. But how could Design Thinking lead up to a social community? An integrated approach involving the citizens was the answer. Thanks to the cooperation of Kalk locals, user surveys were collected to ensure the new library would fit perfectly into the community. All parties shared a vision of a third place that their neighborhood could be proud of and call home. This opportunity to drive change proves that a good story has the power to enthuse stakeholders.
Local living room with a tech edge
Being open to other languages, different ages and cultures is reflected in the library’s interior. It includes a multi-lingual media selection, furniture suitable for seniors, a children’s playground and an entire floor where Generation Z feels welcome enough to make this department their own. Kalk, Cologne’s most migrant-populated district, faces inequality rooted in uneven opportunities. Notably, today it is home to one of Germany’s most innovative libraries, boasting a unique digitecture project by Bremen artist group Urbanscreen.
This installation allows children and adolescents to collaborate with local artists, experimenting with large-scale digital artworks. Transformed into a local living room with a technological edge, the Kalk District Library nurtures community pride and identity.
